Takabe Shrine　たかべ神社

Takabe Shrine, dedicated to the god of cooking, combines the cultural traditions of Japan with the unparalleled spectacle of flowers, the fruits of this area's warm, heavenlike climate.

A special sight of Chiba, Oyama-Senmaida is a beautiful collection of terraced rice paddies, giving a sense of old, rural Japan still close to the city. This site is special to Chiba, and displays the creation of Japan's staple food.

Traditional Chiba Specialties

soy sauce, miso, and teppozuke

Some of Chiba's specialties, these foods are unparalled in flavor due to their common origin in the prefecture.

  • Soy Sauce (醤油）has been part of Chiba since the Edo period, and Chiba remains at the top of soy sauce flavor and production

  • Teppozuke (鉄砲漬）are Chiba's special tsukemono (pickled vegetables), famously from Narita-temple. The name teppozuke comes from how the spices are loaded in the pickle much like how one would load a gun (teppo).

  • Miso (みそ), one of Japan's staple foods, is particularly good in Chiba as well. Make sure to buy some and try for yourself!

Chiba has a variety of arts and crafts that you can create your own, or purchase as a keepsake of this special place.

sake - the perfect gift

A visit to the town of Shisui, the birthplace of sake, provides tours of the brewing process of one of Chiba's specialties. At the "Shisui Magariya", you can buy sake as gifts, try specialty sake of your own, while seeing how it is made from start to finish.

hocho-shiki ceremony

Celebrated twice a year at Takabe Shrine, this ceremony of thanksgiving is dedicated to kitchen knives, a tradition unique to the home of the cooking god.

sakura tulip festival 佐倉チューリップフェスタ

Held every year in April, this festival, which shows over 400,000 tulips around a Dutch windmill, represents Japan's friendship with the Netherlands with an astounding sight.

  • Chiba is the home of Japan's best peanuts (落花生), and they can be enjoyed not only by themselves, but in a special, nonperishable food called rakkasei-miso.
